Dryer Vent Cleaning

Is your dryer taking longer to dry clothes? Are birds in your dryer vent? You could be wasting your money on paying higher electric bills and in some cases people purchase a NEW dryer, when all they need is a dryer vent cleaning!

An un-cleaned dryer vent will cause SLOW drying - BUT a clogged dryer vent is a fire hazard!

Dryer vent fires happen and are a lot more common than you may realize? You may have heard it a million times: the build up of lint in a dryer vent can cause a fire. So you religiously clean out the lint screen after each load of laundry and think that you’re eliminating the risk.

The reality is that while you are reducing the risk, you’re not eliminating it because those lint screens are only catching roughly 25% of the lint. The remaining 75% goes into the dryer vent and sticks to the walls. And that’s all part of what makes dryer vent fires the NUMBER ONE CAUSE OF HOME FIRES!

What should I do?

Make sure your dryer and the attached vents is clean and safe. Make sure that you clean the back and attached vents in the back of your dryer at least once a year. Make sure that you know the warning signs (see below) so you will know the warning signs of a potentially fire dangerous dryer vent.

The video below is a Matt Lauer of the "TODAY SHOW" [ channel 4 news telecast]. In this video Matt Lauer and Natalie Morales-Rhodes shows the Montgomery County Fire Academy in Rockville Maryland demonstrating just how quickly dryer vent fires start and spread. Seeing is believing. Please take a moment to review this important information.

Most people don't realize that homeowners failing to clean the dryer venting systems, account for about 15,600 structure fires, 15 deaths and 400 injuries annually, according to the US Fire Administration National Fire Data Center. Homeowners are becoming more and more aware of this danger.

5 warning signs that you need to clean your dryer vent?

It's time to call Chimney Masters to clean your dryer vent vents when...

1. Drying time for clothes takes longer and longer. Clothes (especially towels or jeans) take a very long time to dry. When a dryer vent is clogged, the drying cycle can double or triple in time. You will notice that clothes are not completely dry at the end of a regular cycle. A dryer is designed to push out the hot moist air for clothing to dry. If your vent is blocked by lint, the air will stay in your dryer keeping your clothes hot and moist. And when it takes twice as long to dry clothes, your dryer runs longer, putting more wear and tear on it and therefore cutting the machine’s life in half.

2. Your clothing and the outside of the dryer are very hot. Do you notice that your clothing is very hot at the end of a cycle or the dryer is hot to touch? This warning sign means the vent is not exhausting properly. If your system is clogged, it not only wastes energy, but can cause the heating element and blower in the dryer to wear out faster. Clothes are hotter than usual at the end of the cycle.

3. You notice a burning smell. When you run your dryer do you smell a burning odor? Lint, which is very flammable, can build up in the exhaust tube, lint trap and even in the drum casing. If it gets too hot, it can catch on fire, causing a burning smell. (Remember to empty the lint trap often). Discontinue use of your dryer and have it inspected as soon as possible.

4. The vent hood flap doesn’t open properly. Another visual red flag that you’re due for a cleaning: You can see lint or debris around the dryer hose or outside vent opening: or the duct hood flap does not open as it is designed to do. An outside vent that doesn’t open when the dryer is running means air flow has been restricted due to lint buildup. Flapper on vent hood doesn't open when dryer is on.

5. Dryer keeps shutting off before the end of the timer ends it's drying cycle.
